President George W. Bush struck North Korea from the terrorism list this weekend after Pyongyang agreed to allow inspections to verify a nuclear declaration that the Stalinist state made earlier this year.
The US hopes that eliminating the two-decade stigma on a nation that Mr Bush in 2002 branded as a member of the “axis of evil” will resurrect the faltering six-party process to rid the Korean peninsula of nuclear weapons.
North Korea started dismantling its facilities at the Yongbyon nuclear complex last November, as part of a deal that would provide the regime with energy assistance and a path to normalised relations with the US.
