North Korea has barred international monitors from a key nuclear facility and threatened to restart its nuclear programme in a serious setback to efforts to remove atomic weapons from the Korean peninsula.
The US urged Pyongyang to return to negotiations, saying the “very disappointing” move would lead to further isolation.
Condoleezza Rice, secretary of state, stressed that the international process to dismantle North Korea's nuclear weapons programme was “by no means” dead, but the move introduces yet another hurdle with only months remaining in the Bush administration.
