The fight against Myanmar’s military government has exposed shopkeeper-turned-rebel Moe Gyi to many dangers, including being shot in the back by a drone.
He has faced another less evident but potentially deadly hazard: the resurgence of malaria through the conflict-racked country’s mosquito-infested forests.
“Because of the war we have to be in the jungle, so we started to get malaria,” says Moe Gyi, who fled across the frontier for care in the Thai frontier town of Mae Sot. “It’s the second time I got it in a year.”
