US Treasury secretary Scott Bessent has called on the new administration in Tokyo to grant the Bank of Japan “policy space” to fight persistent inflation, helping send stocks to an all-time high.
“The Government’s willingness to allow the Bank of Japan policy space will be key to anchoring inflation expectations and avoiding excess exchange rate volatility,” Bessent posted on X shortly before flying out of Tokyo with US President Donald Trump for meetings in South Korea.
Bessent posted on social media just as the central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee was about to begin a two-day meeting to set interest rates.
