Four-year-old artificial intelligence group Anthropic has leapt to a $170bn valuation after raising one of the largest venture funding rounds, boosting its bid to compete with rivals such as OpenAI in a fierce race to dominate the technology.
The San Francisco-based group, which was founded by former OpenAI employees, said the $13bn investment “reinforce[d] its position as the leading intelligence platform for enterprises, developers and power users”.
Venture capital firms Iconiq Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners co-led the round, alongside Fidelity Management & Research Company. A number of other institutional investors and sovereign funds including Singapore’s GIC and the Qatar Investment Authority also participated.
