A decade in fast-changing China has taught me to expect the unexpected but, even so, I was taken aback by the scene at a school in the southwestern city of Chongqing.
A dozen 11-year-olds swung plastic bats at balls thrown overhead by their classmates, playing a game that was, unmistakably, cricket.
“If it flies without hitting the ground, it’s a six,” said Wu Yiyue, girl’s cricket team captain at Qinglong road primary school. “It’s better than football because you don’t have to run everywhere,” added a classmate.
