The G20 nations put on a face-saving show of unity at the Hamburg summit by negotiating a unanimous communiqué despite the deep divisions on trade and climate change driven by Donald Trump’s America First approach.
Angela Merkel presented the summit as a success — even though she acknowledged the meeting had been overshadowed by violent anti-G20 demonstrations.
The German chancellor, who is running for re-election in September, also highlighted key bilateral meetings held in Hamburg, including the first face-to-face encounter between Mr Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin, which the two men described as “constructive”.
