Theresa May triggered a two-year countdown to Britain’s breach with Europe yesterday by serving notice to Brussels that she intends to end their 44-year relationship in pursuit of a new place for the UK in the global order.
“This is a historic moment from which there can be no turning back,” she declared.
Mrs May invoked the EU’s Article 50 exit clause just before 1.30pm Brussels time when Sir Tim Barrow, the UK’s ambassador to the EU, handed in the prime minister’s “notification of withdrawal” letter to Donald Tusk, European Council president.
