The EU has agreed to ease regulation of a new generation of gene-edited crops in the first big loosening of rules since the “Frankenfoods” debate two decades ago.
The move, which still requires final approval from governments and the European parliament, will make it easier to use techniques that create new varieties of weather- or pest-resistant plants faster than conventional breeding methods.
Farmers in the bloc have complained they are losing revenue and crops because of the changing climate and Brussels’ crackdown on the use of fertilisers and pesticides.
