Oil major BP has abandoned plans to build a hydrogen and carbon capture scheme at Teesside in north-east England, paving the way for a big artificial intelligence data centre on the site instead.
The move, confirmed by the company in a statement to the FT on Monday, comes after ministers recently selected the former steel site in Teesside as the location for one of their so-called AI growth zones.
The vision includes the largest data centre in Europe, at nearly 500,000 square metres, which has been supported by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.
