Canada said it was hopeful it can still strike a deal with the US to bring down its tariff rate even as the Trump administration denied that the high levies it set on America’s trading partners were up for negotiation.
“We think there is an option of striking a deal that will bring down some of these tariffs”, Dominic LeBlanc, Canada’s minister responsible for trade with the US, told CBS on Sunday.
He was “encouraged by the conversations” his government has had with US trade representative Jamieson Greer and commerce secretary Howard Lutnick, though “we’re not yet where we need to go to get the deal that’s in the best interest of the two economies”.
